Racist microaggressions in the workplace are examined in this interactive media installation of two telephone sets, re-enacting a typical conversation between a customer and the server at a Canadian-Chinese restaurant. The re-enactment underlines remarks and subtleties which may be seemingly inoffensive, yet are the very thing that perpetuates discrimination and racial bias received by the server. These are called microaggressions. The conversation in the installation reveals the nuanced nature in how prejudice affects those who are systemically discriminated against. The phones’ naturally prompt audience participation in picking up the hand sets and listening to either or both sides of a conversation. The audience’s participation also becomes a critique of one’s positionality of how they are affected or a part of microaggressions.
